Squarespace integration
When you connect a Squarespace store to Ortto, you will unlock all of your customers' cart, order, checkout and donation data. It gives you the ability to craft highly personalized and relevant messages across the customer journey and unleashes powerful data visualization and segmentation.
Squarespace prerequisites
This integration process requires having a Squarespace store for which you have administrative permission to install apps.
Squarespace activities
Activities from Squarespace are automatically added to your Ortto account when integrating with Squarespace.
Learn more about squarespace activities, their attributes and field types.
Connect from Ortto
To connect to Squarespace:
- On the Data sources page, click New data source.
- Under Ecommerce or All data sources, select Squarespace, then Connect.
- On Connect to Squarespace:
- Select your Data retention preference to either:
- store only the last 90 days of activity data, or
- select the time frame for the data stored, and the activities which will be stored.
- Under Advanced options you can:
- Choose which CDP fields can be modified from the Squarespace data source, or
- Choose not to modify CDP data fields that already have a value. You also have the option to automatically archive records in Ortto when they are deleted in Squarespace.
- Click Connect then log in to your Squarespace account.
- Click Allow to proceed.
- On the Merge page, select the appropriate strategy by which people’s (customers') data is merged from Squarespace into your Ortto’s CDP.
- At Capture, you’ll be provided with a Squarespace-specific tracking code, which is required to receive activity data from Squarespace.
- Copy the Squarespace tracking code and paste it into your Squarespace site header. If you don’t copy the code here you can access it from the data source page, once connected. More detailed instructions are provided below.
- Click Done to exit the setup.
NOTE: It is recommended to set the data retention limits while setting up the data source. Updating the data retention limits in the future will require a resync of the data source, which may affect multiple audiences and campaigns within your customer data platform (CDP). Learn more about configuring data retention under Configuring data retention.
NOTE:
The merge options:
- Import and merge new records only,
- Import and overwrite any records that exist, and
- Import new records only
are equivalent to the respective emerge strategies for people:
- Append only,
- Overwrite existing, and
- Ignore
How is the data merged into Ortto?
Data is merged from Squarespace to Ortto on the initial connection. Subsequently, newly modified objects are synced when they occur, as the connection is based on webhooks.
IMPORTANT: You must add the Ortto tracking code for Squarespace to your Squarespace store in order to receive activity data from Squarespace.
If you did not set this up during the initial connection with Squarespace, you can do so afterwards like so:
- In Ortto, navigate to the Squarespace data source view.
- Note that this is different from your Ortto account’s tracking code data source.
- Navigate to your Squarespace store and access the Code injection option (via Settings > Developer tools > Code injection).
- Publish your site to save the changes.
The Squarespace integration is configured as read only, which means that no data is sent from Ortto to Squarespace.
When a person is added to your CDP from the Squarespace data synchronization, if they do not already exist as a contact in your CDP, they are added as a new contact. New contacts are automatically subscribed to receive email communications (but are unsubscribed to SMS by default).
If a contact synced from Squarespace already exists in Ortto, the contact will not have their email or SMS permissions changed; they will remain as they were set in Squarespace.
Initial data sync
Data associated with the Squarespace objects merged into the Ortto CDP.
The merge follows the data merge strategy selected during the initial connection with Squarespace. Ortto activities store data based on the objects you chose to be synced during the integration.
Ongoing data sync
Squarespace data is merged in to Ortto shortly after it occurs.
Resynchronizing data
Squarespace data is resynchronized when the data source is reconnected and when the data retention limits are adjusted. The resync will not perform a full backfill of data, it will only import changes that occurred since the last Ortto request for Squarespace data.
A resync of the Squarespace data may affect the audiences and campaigns within the CDP by resetting the attributes for the person, and activities, causing a person to potentially re-enter an audience or campaign within the CDP.
What does the data source add to my account?
The Squarespace data source adds:
- Squarespace contact and company records and their associated fields to your CDP, known as people or contacts in Ortto.
- Squarespace activities, based on the objects selected during setup, from the last 90 days. In some cases, however, it may be necessary to store an activity and its attribute data for longer. Therefore, Ortto provides a mechanism for customers on selected Ortto plans to opt-in to selectively store their activity data for longer. Learn more about data retention under Configuring data retention.
- A Squarespace-specific Back in stock widget to place on your site. To enable this:
- On the Capture page, click New widget.
- In the left-hand menu, click View all widget templates then search for "Back in stock".
- In the search results, you’ll see a Squarespace back in stock reminder widget.
- Select the Squarespace widget, then click Use template.
- Configure the widget as required, then turn it ON to enable it.
- The ability to use Liquid syntax in campaign messages to personalize your messages using merge tags for Squarespace person and organization fields, and activity attributes. Learn more about using Liquid syntax under Personalizing campaign content with Liquid.
NOTE: Deleting a Squarespace data source connection will not remove the current entries in the CDP for people or activities that were merged from that Squarespace connection.
View Squarespace fields in your CDP
Customize your CDP field visibility and add Squarespace fields by clicking the cog icon, then select or clear the fields you want to show or hide. Squarespace fields are indicated with the small Squarespace icon.
Access the Squarespace data source view
When a data source is connected, you are provided with a data source view. On the Data sources page, click the data source you wish to view.
A data source’s view is the administration page where you can:
- view and manage the data source in the left-hand details panel, and
- under the relevant tabs on the right-hand side, view:
- an Overview of the data source,
- an Activity feed, and
- an Audience table, which displays the people imported from Squarespace.
In the details panel, you can give the data source a new name (this will not affect your Squarespace account settings). To do so, hover over the name and click the pencil icon, then type the new name and click on a blank area of the page to save the name. You can also disconnect the data source, and:
- choose whether to modify system CDP fields,
- view the Squarespace tracking code, and
- edit the data retention period.
Learn more about the data source view under Managing data sources.
Using Squarespace
Discover how you can get the most out of your Squarespace integration with Ortto’s filters, reports, dashboards, and campaigns.
When you import your Squarespace data into Ortto, you can:
- Recover abandoned checkouts from your Squarespace store automatically by creating a journey campaign with a series of email and SMS messages. We’ve created a template for this journey, which you can modify with Squarespace activities and fields.
- Turn browsers into buyers using merge tags in email, SMS or push campaigns. If a potential customer views a product page but doesn’t make a purchase you can send them a message or notification reminding them about the product and providing an incentive to buy, such as with a coupon for their first purchase. Insert merge tags for the Squarespace Viewed product activity to add the specific product details to the message or notification.
- Leverage the Squarespace Waiting on stock and Back in stock activities in Ortto to notify your customers of restocked items and track the results. Create a journey or playbook campaign to automatically notify that audience when the product is available. Then, create a report to track how many people purchased the product after being notified of the restock.
NOTE: Ensure you have enabled the Squarespace Back in stock widget in order to use the Back in stock activity.
- Create a report to visualize the impact of your advertising campaigns on revenue. For example, create a pie chart for the Attributed activity and aggregate by sum of attribute, then group by campaign name to see the attribution value of each campaign.
Email message widgets
When you create an email campaign or an email message within a journey or playbook, you can access a number of content widgets to customize your email message with Squarespace data.
Choose from the following content widgets to drag and drop into your email message.
Then click Configure to set up the widget as you’d like it.

Disconnect and delete the data source
You must disconnect and archive a data source before you can delete it.
Disconnecting a data source from Ortto will stop new data from the data source merging with the CDP.
Learn about disconnecting, archiving and deleting a data source under Managing data sources.
Data source already connected
Disconnect, archive, and delete the existing Squarespace connection before attempting to connect again; the existing data source must be deleted.
Connect more than one Squarespace account
Ortto can connect to only one Squarespace account at a time. To connect to another Squarespace account, you must first disconnect and delete the data source for the current Squarespace account.
