How to add an ICS calendar file to email messages
Overview
To share a calendar event, you can attach an ICS file to your email. This article explains how to add the ICS file using the File Manager.
What is an ICS file?
An ICS file is a standard calendar format used to share event details. It includes information like the event title, date, time, location, and description. You can download and add an ICS file to any calendar app, such as Google Calendar, Outlook, or Apple Calendar, to save the event easily.
How to get an ICS file
To use an ICS file with Ortto, you’ll need to get or create one. Here are a couple of ways to do this:
- Export from a calendar app: Most apps like Google Calendar, Outlook, or Apple Calendar let you export events as ICS files.
- Generate an ICS file online: You can use online tools to create a custom ICS file. We recommend the Litmus iCalendar event maker tool.Litmus recommends this iCalendar event maker tool.
Accessing the file manager
To add an ICS file to an email, it must first be available in the File Manager.
To access it, go to Marketing > Campaigns > Create a new campaign (or edit an existing one) and import your file.

Adding the ICS file to email
First, decide on your call-to-action (CTA) and how you want recipients to access the ICS file. Then, add the file to your email using one of these content blocks:
- Text with a hyperlink
- A button
- An image
NOTE: You can't click and download the file in the email preview or design area. To verify the file link, you'll need to send a test email or use a live campaign.
How to Add an ICS File to Text
In a text block, select the row or highlight text to hyperlink. Then, click the link icon, choose File manager under the link type options, and select your ICS file.
How to Add an ICS File to a Button
When adding a button, go to the button’s Content properties. Under Action, click Link file to access the File manager and choose your ICS file.
How to Add an ICS File to an Image
In an Image content block, either browse for or select a previously added image. Then, in the Action section of the Content panel, click Link file to add your ICS file.
