Working with recipients
Overview
The Recipients page lets you choose one audience, subscriber tag, or segment filter. You can select only one option at a time. This guide will walk you through the different selection types available.
Accessing recipients
Navigate to Marketing > Campaigns > Select your email campaign > Select the recipients tab.
Recipient options
Audience
When selecting an audience on the Recipient tab, you can only choose one audience at a time. This allows you to track and measure engagement more effectively, as you'll have clearer insights on how a specific group interacts with your message.
If you need to send to multiple audiences, check out the examples under Filters.
NOTE: The subscriber count may be lower than the total member count. Emails are only sent to recipients who are subscribed to the audience, not to all members.
Tag
When selecting a tag on the Recipient tab, you can only choose one tag at a time. Sending to people with a specific tag allows you to target a more relevant group, ensuring your message reaches the right audience.
If you need to send to contacts with multiple tags, check out the examples under Filters.
TIP: If you're importing contacts from a CSV, you can tag them during the import process. Then, simply send your email to those contacts with that tag.
NOTE: The subscriber count may be lower than the total number of contacts with the tag. Emails are only sent to recipients who are actively subscribed and have the tag, not to all contacts with the tag.
Filter
The filter option on the Recipient tab is great for sending to a specific group. Below are some examples of filters you can use to target the right audience.
Multiple audiences
There may be times when you want to send an email to contacts in one or more audiences.
Here's how to set it up:
- Email contacts in BOTH audiences Use the AND filter to send the email to contacts in both audiences.
2. Email contacts in EITHER audience Use the OR filter to send the email to contacts in either audience.
Multiple tags
There may be times when you want to send an email to contacts with one or more tags.
Here's how to set it up:
- Email contacts with BOTH tags Use the AND filter to send the email to contacts with both tags.
2. Email contacts with EITHER tags Use the OR filter to send the email to contacts with either tag.
Send to contacts who soft bounced
If an email soft bounces and wasn't delivered to some contacts, you may want to resend it to those recipients.
Send to contacts who did not open an email
To resend an email to contacts who didn’t open it, you can use the resend feature only once and within 24 hours to 30 days after the original send.
If it's been more than 30 days or you've already used the resend feature, duplicate the email and apply a filter to target contacts who didn’t open it.
NOTE: Make sure to include Sent email has occurred in your filter. If you only use Opened email has not occurred, people who never received the email will be included, since they don’t have an open activity on their profile.

Utilizing data source activities
Ortto lets you create filters based on data source activities in your account.
EX: You can send communications to contacts updated in a Salesforce campaign, as shown below.
