Migrating to Ortto from MailChimp

Export lists or segments from MailChimp

If you need to export multiple lists or segments from MailChimp, you’ll need to do this one at a time. Here’s how you can export both:

Export a list

  1. Go to the Lists page and click on the list you want to export.
  2. Click Export list.
  3. Select Export as CSV.

Export lists from the overall lists page

  1. Go to the Lists page and select the list you want to export.
  2. From the dropdown menu next to Stats, choose Exports.
  3. On the export page, look for the green checkmark (ready to export) or the yellow clock icon (still processing).
  4. When you see the green checkmark, click Export as CSV.

Export a segment

  1. From the Lists page, click on the list you want to export.
  2. Click View saved segments and select the segment you want to export.
  3. Click Export segment.
  4. Choose Export as CSV.

Import contacts to Ortto

Once you've downloaded your MailChimp CSV file, follow these steps to import your contacts into Ortto:

  1. Log in to Ortto.
  2. Navigate to CDP > People.
  3. Select More > Import.
  4. On the Connect a data source page > Select Spreadsheet import.
  5. Upload the CSV file you downloaded from MailChimp.
  6. Map the columns from your CSV file to the fields in Ortto.
    1. If some fields don’t exist yet in Ortto, you can create them by navigating to:
      1. Settings > Customer data > Fields > New custom field.

Importing MailChimp groups

To import MailChimp groups into Ortto, you’ll need to do this separately:

  1. In MailChimp, go to Lists > Manage Contacts > Groups > View Subscribers.
  2. Export the segment or group you want to import.
  3. Back in Ortto, import those contacts, on the Tag step add a Tag for the group, and check the option Import and merge new data only. This ensures that any additional info will be added to contacts you’ve already imported.
    1. Once your contacts are imported, you can use the tag you applied to create an audience or recreate your MailChimp group in Ortto.

Create audiences in Ortto

To recreate your MailChimp lists in Ortto, use the tags added during import:

  1. Go to CDP > Audiences and click New Audience.
  2. Under Filter, search for and select the tag you applied during import.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Give your audience a name and icon.
  5. If you want this audience to appear in the preference center for contacts to manage their subscriptions, check the box.
